1. Always make sure that containers are properly marked with the appropriate labels and placards.
When placing labels and stickers on your containers it is important to make sure that the labels are in a place where they can be easily read by anybody who enters the area. It is recommended to use weather proof labels and placards so they maintain their integrity through inclement weather. After all, what would be the point of having the labeling if they cannot be seen or read.
2. Make sure waste is always stored in the appropriate containers.
When it comes to storing your hazardous waste, not all containers are created equal. For example, corrosive materials will eat through your metal containers in a heartbeat. Just as a flammable liquid needs to be ground in a metal container. Always consult your hazardous waste provider or SDS sheet when choosing your containers for hazardous waste storage.
3. Your containers get old too!
It is a good practice to inspect all containers that you intend to use for hazardous material prior to accumulation. Shinning a flashlight into the container may help you to see any tiny pinholes that may be hiding out of plain site. A few minutes of your time can save you time, money and even personnel safety.
4. Secondary Containment should not be second on your list.
Ensure waste containers are stored in a containment area that is easily accessible to authorized personnel only. This area should be able to hold the capacity of the hazardous waste that is stored in the containers should there be a spill.
